Is Mitzusune real or a parody? also aren’t you not supposed to watch tv on a phone on the plane

That depends (and I can’t really speak for US specifically) but airplane mode, sometimes with wifi and Bluetooth enabled, may be allowed [Wikipedia]. I can find texts that claim airplane companies seem set on rolling out Starlink carried wifi, starting 2025, across the world.

Airplane mode was originally introduced to reduce the risk of cell phones creating issues with the avionics (obviously a big no-no). But there’s been little to no documented issues of cell phones actually causing issues with avionics, and the amount of power they out put is significantly lower than when airplane mode was first introduced.

However, a much larger and more apparent issue is that while airborne, a plane with 2-300+ cellphones could easily create issues with cell towers by being able to connect to a significantly larger amount due to elevation. Cell towers semi randomly having to go from potentially an average of users less than 100, to suddenly 2, 3, 4 times that amount could easily create bottlenecks or other problems for the people living in that area.

Use airplane mode, WiFi and Bluetooth aren’t an issue. Newer phones will actually leave WiFi and Bluetooth enabled when airplane mode is enabled if your device is already connected to something. My phone explicitly states that it will remember if I had turned on/off either WiFi or Bluetooth during “Flight” mode and will respect that choice next time I use it.

Thanks for the detailed response! Yes, it was security issues due to uncertainty of how different planes would react, in combination with that airplanes have the strictest safety rules (lowest accidents per transport distance).

With the old cell phone techniques cell towers could easily get overloaded, so maybe that was a concern outside of public events (such as sports events – but I can’t find much written about it). The new techniques should mostly solve that since the towers can make active cells that are narrow – such as 10ish seats on a sport stadium – and then reuse that frequency band on other antennas. That is part of why they can deliver data so fast.

The Starlink wifi services would aim to solve that differently I think, if they get realized.
