As I recall, using ice magic is a sign of far greater power than fire magic, since it more strongly violates the laws of thermodynamics. (I’m not good at physics, please don’t ask me to explain.)
The first snowfall, though… That makes Yuki older than all of human history. A truly primordial spirit, who may have been aware of the dinosaurs and even a time before the Earth bore organic life.
What a perspective she would have on existence … and how lucky Yosh!-Earth is that she is not evil and/or insane.
Sorry but it is incorrect to assume the first snowfall means the first snow to ever happen on earth. With the way the spirits work, they gain spiritual power from people’s souls. They effectively are created through magic and souls. So it’s not that she is the spirit created by the first snowfall, but rather through the collective thought and magic from the time people recognized snow as snow. That would have taken thousands of years before the spirit became mature enough to take a form. So Yuki Origin is more strongly defined by the times before most of the myths in Asia. For Yosh! this goes back pre-history, because the pre-history period of Yosh! is a lost time of magic.
Spirits as beings capable of thought basically can’t exist without creatures capable of complex thought. Those beings mold and shape the spirits till they can take on a life of their own. The fake Amaterasu is the example of a spirit being treated as something it isn’t. The spirit was tied to something and worshipers used that thing to worship it as if it were or was related to Amaterasu. This caused the spirit to think it was and it grew from that power taking on powers related to those beliefs.
Hope this helps clear it up- and saves me from getting beaten up by Yuki from making people think she’s super old! 😛
So essentially, spirits in this context are thought-forms – beings whose power and persona are shaped at least in part by the collective focus of beings capable of at least trying to define what the spirit is no matter how inaccurate and physics breaking they may be.
This is becoming pretty common – Percy Jackson, American Gods, etc. Humanity see something happen in the past, beings that are later called spirits and gods arise from the stories we tell each other to explain the world and become solidified when the stories are cemented and spread far and wide. When the story changes the beings change, it is actually a pretty interesting concept – beings who may be incredibly powerful are subject to the collective whims of humanity and may change without consent.
You posted the same thing twice so i deleted the newer one. It looks like it got flagged because it was sent twice so it thought it was spam but it doesn’t log that much information so that’s just a guess. I didn’t see anything else in the message that would normally flag it for needing approval.
And yep, in Yosh! souls are powerful things that influence and shape magic, souls are influenced by experiences of the bodies they are attached to. Some souls are able to resonate with their body to allow them to easily manipulate certain magics, this is where the idea of affinities and magic chimeras come from that can use a certain type of magic. Then you have those that through understanding they can recreate the conditions to manipulate magic through imagination, those with an affinity find those easier to manipulate (this goes back to Kate’s ancestors who were capable of using multiple types of magic though it took a lot more effort, they weren’t restricted to just one affinity and had an easier time drawing on the magic around them which is what got them the title of Geomancers).
37. There is no “overkill.” There is only “open fire” and “reload.”
I guess this is what a goddess does to those who threaten her mortal friends.
For another (mangled) quote:
There was no scream, there was no time
The goddess called Yuki had spoken
There was only ice, and then… nothing

Huh, I suppose what with them threatening Phil and Kate…and that frigid response to Kate, elicited quite the cold shoulder from Yuki. To be honest the dude doesn’t deserve his station.

It only just occurred to me on a reread, the lore at the end, makes a bit more sense if you read it as inari’s (Yuki’s son’s) pov.
It is Inari speaking. That’s the point of him saying “My mother” it’s to indicate whom is speaking based on the previous page. He’s speaking to the Exorcist explaining who and what Yuki is. Also pointing out as the mother of Kitsune, she is known for her mystical fire as all foxes, are, but her natural elemental power is ice. Her natural talents are in ice but she’s mastered fire through study and effort that its become synonymous with all of Kitsune Lore(Fox Fire).
It seems obvious to me now, but on my first read for some reason I read it as yuki’s inner monologue.
Also I just gotta wonder what kinda fool prompted a spirit being of ice and snow, to master fire to the point she and her kin became near synonymous with fire just to prove a point!
It doesn’t really become clear that it’s Inari speaking and not Yuki’s inner monologue until the second text box and the mention of “mother”.
I think it would have been clearer and less confusing if the order of the text boxes had been reversed, as well as giving the reveal a bit more of a dramatic impact.

Yuki used foxfire on Emi.
She used icecube on Amaterasu.
Wow. That’s cold.
“(And scary.) All hail the storm!”

You can make things colder as long as you move the heat somewhere else. That’s how refrigerators work.

I mean, her age isn’t really a big deal when she keeps her beauty that well. 🙂
Still a very respectable age, with loads of experience to draw on. 😉
(Now anticipating an art piece of Yuki chasing Phil with a bat.)

Right, Yuki got bored one day and taught herself how to make fire because, “reasons”. Yet another reason to stay on her good side.
It seems obvious to me now, but on my first read for some reason I read it as yuki’s inner monologue.
