As I recall, using ice magic is a sign of far greater power than fire magic, since it more strongly violates the laws of thermodynamics. (I’m not good at physics, please don’t ask me to explain.)

The first snowfall, though… That makes Yuki older than all of human history. A truly primordial spirit, who may have been aware of the dinosaurs and even a time before the Earth bore organic life.
What a perspective she would have on existence … and how lucky Yosh!-Earth is that she is not evil and/or insane.

You can make things colder as long as you move the heat somewhere else. That’s how refrigerators work.

I mean, her age isn’t really a big deal when she keeps her beauty that well. 🙂

Still a very respectable age, with loads of experience to draw on. 😉
(Now anticipating an art piece of Yuki chasing Phil with a bat.)

So essentially, spirits in this context are thought-forms – beings whose power and persona are shaped at least in part by the collective focus of beings capable of at least trying to define what the spirit is no matter how inaccurate and physics breaking they may be.

This is becoming pretty common – Percy Jackson, American Gods, etc. Humanity see something happen in the past, beings that are later called spirits and gods arise from the stories we tell each other to explain the world and become solidified when the stories are cemented and spread far and wide. When the story changes the beings change, it is actually a pretty interesting concept – beings who may be incredibly powerful are subject to the collective whims of humanity and may change without consent.

37. There is no “overkill.” There is only “open fire” and “reload.”

I guess this is what a goddess does to those who threaten her mortal friends.

For another (mangled) quote:

There was no scream, there was no time
The goddess called Yuki had spoken
There was only ice, and then… nothing

Yuki shows that she is no snowflake.

This is much better than my theory that Yuki was the original Inari

Huh, I suppose what with them threatening Phil and Kate…and that frigid response to Kate, elicited quite the cold shoulder from Yuki. To be honest the dude doesn’t deserve his station.

It only just occurred to me on a reread, the lore at the end, makes a bit more sense if you read it as inari’s (Yuki’s son’s) pov.

Right, Yuki got bored one day and taught herself how to make fire because, “reasons”. Yet another reason to stay on her good side.

It seems obvious to me now, but on my first read for some reason I read it as yuki’s inner monologue.

Also I just gotta wonder what kinda fool prompted a spirit being of ice and snow, to master fire to the point she and her kin became near synonymous with fire just to prove a point!

Initially, I had the same confusion.

It doesn’t really become clear that it’s Inari speaking and not Yuki’s inner monologue until the second text box and the mention of “mother”.

I think it would have been clearer and less confusing if the order of the text boxes had been reversed, as well as giving the reveal a bit more of a dramatic impact.

Yuki used foxfire on Emi.
She used icecube on Amaterasu.
