Using Darkness with a character with Darkvision is a common noob mistake. It can be useful for an ambush or escape/stealth, but unless the whole party is tooled with Darkvision (which is both rare and limited-range), it is not so much of an advantage in combat as one might think (especially given the prevalence of monsters with Darkvision or blindsense/sight)
