I suspect once Inari learns about Phil and Kate he’ll side with them, they really didn’t do anything wrong. At the very least maybe he’ll instruct the local spirit population about not getting too close to Phil if they don’t want to be exposed.
Inari: Spirits! Avoid the gaijin nerd!
Phil, later: Wow, this trip was great! Except for the snake thing, no weirdness at all!

I don’t normally comment, but first I agree with the guy defending the Exorcist 4 pages back. Considering the situation it makes sense that he’d try to deescalate and separate people from the situation. Even if he was an ass, that doesn’t take away from the perceived danger of the situation. Regardless there may be some mental corruption at play too. The spirit is a fake sun goddess and that delusion likely has consequences for everyone involved.
Can confirm, that other poster must be sincerely handsome and intelligent. /s
It irks me that more people dismiss hostile actions and intentions just because there are no consequences. I think it’s a side effect of genre blindness.
For example if you remove the context of it being a romantic comedy in most genre’s of that type, the couples are generally kinda abusive and awful to each other.
But with respect to Darius who was willing to argue with me at length about it. It appears I am in the minority in that opinion. Glad to see I’m not alone though.
Agreed, that previous poster sounded handsome and intelligent. /s Jokes aside, it’s irksome how people often disreguard violence in media provided there are no consequences.
Respect to Darius for arguing with me, even if I still disagree with him.
But I honestly read it as a genre blindness thing. Akin to how if you remove the narrative framing, most romantic comedies are about two random people being god awful to each other.
I don’t quite grasp how people can be more upset that Exo said something mean. In the face of a literal casually homicidal monster. I won’t reiterate how I think it’s culturally weird for him to have misogyny as a character flaw given his circumstances.
But maybe there is something specifically unhealthy with bonding with spirits? In retrospect Axel did have similar issues a while back. But I percieved that as more a side effect of the demon prince trying to force the connection.
I agree, that poster sounded intelligent and attractive. (S) Jokes aside. It’s irksome to see how often violence is disreguarded in media as long as there are no overt consequences.
I generally read it as a genre blindness thing. As similar issues exist in romantic comedies when you remove the narrative conceit around them. Generally turning it into two people being god awful to each other for the majority of the movie.
Respect to Darius for being willing to argue with me about it. Even if I still think he’s wrong. While it’s nice to see I’m not alone in my assesment, it does seem like it’s a minority opinion.
That said I’m still flabberghasted that people find the Exorcist more disgruntling than a casually homicidal literal monster.
I suppose there must be side effects for bonding with spirits though. In retrospect Axel exhibited similar issues a while back while bonded to his demon prince. But I had always infered it to being a side effect of it being a forced connection.
Though again retrospectively the Atlantian did suggest there were congnitive behavior changes as a side effect of going to the spiritual realm. So maybe it lines up? But like hot damn. Ultimate phenomenal cosmic power for the price of misogyny. I can’t tell if that’s a cheap price or raw deal.
Apologies for the extra posts, thought the internet ate the first two because I was being tongue in cheek with the original comment section triggering the system.
Deescalation was a noble goal, but being an ass ran counter to it. As with his agency, “Great cause, wrong person” may be a recurring theme.

Hope you saved up your pennies, braid-boy, ’cause it sure looks like you’re going to be looking for a new job.

Lord Inari would probably recognize the Null by description right? Considering he would have been alive and present during the previous Age of Magic and would remember its violent end as the previous Null waged all-out war against the Magi and sealed their magic away along with the vast majority of all magic in the world.
Well, even if he doesn’t recognise Phil as the Null from PossessedAsshat’s (probably inaccurate) description, I believe Lord Inari is wise enough to know he should probably wait around a bit and check in with Mother before taking any further action.
Oh boy, I hope Lord Inari pays a visit to his mother’s new friends.

Also pedantic note. It wasn’t the Exorcist’s fault. Yuki came in as he was considering subjugating Phil. While it doesn’t bode well, he never actually decided or not on whether to commit. It’s still the Suijin’s fault.
Technically it’s also at least partially Phils fault. He should know better by now, everywhere he goes he causes the local spirit-life and magic users to panic. He really should have a squad of robot maids with sophisticated detection equipment and other gear to protect everyone else from themselves when they come in contact with his nullness.

Guy’s about to go Null
His speech bubble in panel 4 should end in a period not a question mark. He isn’t asking a question, he’s demanding information.
Got it! Thanks!
