To be completely fair to Inari, it’s tradition for kitsune to try a little subterfuge.

Well congrats to Enigma42 on the last comic for their prediction of Kate’s reaction, pretty much nailed it. Pretty much forced Inari to go with honesty right away. Now I’m looking forward to his reaction to Phil once he show’s up.
Thank you but I thought it was obvious course of action for a happly married woman on vacation wanting to get away from the crazy

I would have thought Inari had more practice with being both professional and a smartass. While I’m sure it’s good for the writer to have them fold immediately. It’s not as entertaining.
Maybe, but I would argue that this is still pretty entertaining!
Think about it, normally yes, inari is/can be a smartass as much as they want, there are very few strong enough or with enough influence to make them behave.
but in this case it’s someone with their mom on speed dial!
That’s a VERY high level threat when your mom is yuki, who is likely one of the most powerful beings in existence. Both in strength and influence. Or at the least part of the second/third highest level of power, since she lives in and works for the celestial realm. ( at least i think so, may have to double check that)
Thus forcing them to be both on the back foot and be much more himble and informal than they are likely used to being.
You call it folding, but I call it course correction. Inari’s first tactic had backfired spectacularly in that rather than being an enigmatic icebreaker that drew Kate in to talk, she interpreted it as rakish flirtation that made her want nothing to do with him.
Consequentially, continuing to try that angle would be interpreted as Inari being unable to take a hint. So a change in tactics was advisable, with Inari trying to prove sincerity by talking about their common connection.
The change in demeanor similarly helps to break the perception of flirtation by making it clear that there’s no intention to impress or intrigue.
I doubt Kate would keep her tail up if she’s not with family. If it’s anything like actual cats, she’d only have it up if she was particularly relaxed and around close friends/family.

Okay, smarter than I gave him credit for in actually coming right out with his intentions. Probably learned that when dealing with his mom it’s better NOT to play mind games as she seems to have little patience for them unless it’s a test/lesson. Which given how some Kitsune/Kumiho/Huli Jing have been represented is probably a really good thing because if she had to deal with someone like Daji or Tamamo-no-Mae I feel like Yuki would lose her patience really quickly.
Honestly given the current plot threads and just general weirdness I have to wonder how Yuki would react to the Fate representation of Tamamo and the story that entails (pun not intended but it amuses me regardless). Mostly just for the fact that she’s actually an avatar of sorts for Amaterasu and a much less villainous portrayal than the original myth.
Hopefully we get a bit more information about Yuki’s past and her other children (I expected she had kids from the story she told Emi and Inari’s line here confirms it) but I’m also expecting Yuki to drop in sooner than later to scold Inari for interrupting Kate’s honeymoon. I’m also expecting some sort of freak out when Inari meets Phil.
I’m expecting Inari to be wearing magic clothes, and for it to be revealed that, yes, Phil’s magic WILL dissolve magical clothing. Meaning that Yuki’s caution when she was first introduced was prudent.

Saying you’re probably her favorite just screams “red flag”. He’s trying too hard to talk to her and I wouldn’t be surprised if he bungled this attempt, too.

I am still wondering if Yuki will be furious if Inari doesn’t say hi to her soon
See? They’re a goofball much like their mom. Can’t wait for Yuki to show up though.
Well, Inari is wiser than some. ^_^

How many tails can Inari manifest?
Inari is a 9 tail kitsune.
So she’s hiding her tail in her pants?
