I think they might be ringing a specific melody, or each one swung in an alternating pattern, but I really like the idea of the first option, like maybe they just started tinkling out Saria’s Song, or that song of Life from Chrono Cross.

Agreed. Unexpected revelation, but the core plot remains untwisted.

Maybe not all the couples on the cruise are honeymooners (already married)? And with different last names since the CID blocked the name change that important clue could not be read from the passenger list.
