It’s repeatedly been shown that Phil’s anti-magic/null abilities don’t target things Phil thinks they shouldn’t on an unconscious level. For example ANY pure spirit/magical being should be nullified instantly on contact or close proximity to him but they don’t unless phil regards them as hostile. Similarly, all of the robot girls have orichalcum-based power cores, which shouldn’t work around Phil but do.
Remember that Phil’s magic is sentient in the same way as the Magi’s.
Phil has come a long way. From subconscious shrugging off damage and spells to casting large anti-magic (or anti-outsider) zones.

Inari was a kaiju standing in the water until just a moment before. he displaced water, and that water has not had a chance to rush back in yet now that Phil’s anti-magic has dispelled the outsider corruption and returned inari to being human sized.

I’m thankful for the actor list, it could have been Yuki already saving Inari. (And where did nameless robocop-Celestial remains go!?)

Well Phil certainly got a MUCH better hand on his abilities so we no longer literally have to throw him at them (read the original Power fight or Lien minimizing the damage when Penpen fought his brother). I’m a bit curious how Phil’s unique relationship with magic is going to interact with Inari though. I know it won’t cause injury as it hasn’t in the past but will it have any knock on effects, particularly with the degree of outsider corruption cleared. I do know that any celestials watching are going to be asking Yuki some VERY pointed questions because this is a HUGE step up in Phil’s effectiveness, also Yuki’s going to have to answer questions about saving Inari by pulling him out of the line of fire because I have a STRONG suspicion that the higher ups won’t like that.
As for aging yourself in the comments, yeah that’s certainly a thing and you caught me with that backsplash because I’ll admit even watching my honorary nieces and nephews that they spend more time on tablets than using imagination.

He also repelled the totally physical water in the giant sphere- which like, we know he can dissipate physical force but this is next level and frankly terrifying.
Remember Yuki saying if he had full control of his powers he’d be top 3 in the cosmos? Wellll…… if he wasn’t a passively good sort of guy he’d be top of the line on a lot of things’ kill list… I mean not that the my could…. I guess they could go after Kate, but do you really want an intelligent immortal snail with several top tier divine allies as your sworn enemy?

…Did he just “delete” a bunch of water? Cause while there should be void cavities from the kaiju form disappearing, that is neither the same nor the same volume of displaced water.
My guess is that he just removed everything that wasn’t Inari from the area.
so this is a concern… and forgive me if i am misunderstanding the panel, but did he negate and remove the non magical water?
Can’t take any chances with how far the corruption spread. The outsider is doing all it can to survive, infecting ocean life is part of that- and full on deleting some stuff is just easier for it that what it had to do to actually bring Inari out of it, but more on that Friday!
Wow wasn’t expecting a direct reply. Ok so i know its been established that it can affect non-magical things before, like when it completely negated a bullet fired at phil from existance, but like i dunno the scale at which it deleted the water made it feel more… i dunno real to me.
so, going back to 2899, did the eyeball that corrupted Inari get dragged here too, and did it get annihilated by Phil, or is it still back at the original battle site? I just went back and checked just to reread the whole outsider bit and realized the eyeball just spat at Inari, not joined with him, to infect him, so it’s possibly still out there, unless it got fried by that Celestial Eyeball in the last shot of that panel.
That will be addressed later- if it helps though- its not a problem anymore. There will be a comic page later confirming and why XD
I think I floated two pages ago that Phil might be about to get a ranged technique – looks like the answer was yes! Very dramatic and visually impactful way to show it too. I love how the panel itself is rounded, to complement the roundness of the AoE that Phil Nullified.
Inari falling is great detail – suggesting either the kaiju was an illusion, or that the ‘core’ of Inari was in the head. And really, part of it may have just been Phil’s mental image of ‘how best to do this’ – and his magic just makes it happen. All the more sign of how broken Phil’s aspect is… he can simply choose to reject something magical. For some reason that makes me think Bleach…?
Either way, I look forward to seeing the followup consequences from this whole encounter – reactions from Inari, Yuki, celestials, Kate – and maybe the shrine family or the cruise ship for good measure. How do you follow up a close encounter with a corrupted kaiju?

Technically there is no specific reference in the comic. The first two panels are a memory from Phil’s childhood (one could argue the line “Go forth magic!” is a loose reference to the first Tobey Maguire Spider-Man “go web, go! Flyyyy-“, but I only realized that afterwards when re-reading it that is was kinda similar feeling). Phil calls it out as weird is a hint though at something story related.
