Oh dang, look at poor Inari. I wonder how it feels for them to have Phil, the “monster” they were about to “slay” standing up for them to their mum?
Probably deserves some headpats for trying to defend their mum at least. Their heart was in the right place!
I think generally- no parent want’s their child to die for them. ^_^
Yeah, but they were doing what they thought was best—they just didn’t spend enough time thinking. (:
took me a second to Grammar the 2nd cell sentence for “not That, That”
also she looks sad.. but thats normal for been yelled at for been stupid in that way
It’s a proper grammar usage in which that that can be subjective and adjective one right after the other.
that that
that that is a link above this.
Did Inari get more androgenous mid scolding?
That’s just them looking a little pathetic (affectionate)
To be fair, mythologically canonically, Inari is shapeshifting levels of gender fluid
You’ve hurt their feelings plenty, though, Yuki. õ_o
As someone who has had to go back and double check/correct pronouns when talking about Inari I can feel Phil’s pain here.
Also the “Magical construct that can’t cause real injury” kinda feels like the hammers from El Goonish Shive but frankly being able to set a heavy blunt object to “stun” is just a really useful ability all around so makes sense to develop in just about any setting. Just curious if there happened to be some overlap.
The anger born of worry makes sense and wasn’t an angle I really considered for the same reasons Phil laid out (honestly most times I wind up syncing with Phil to some degree) and it also answers my earlier question in that this is some kind of natural inborn sense that Inari has but they’ve apparently overdeveloped it to a degree that Phil’s nature as the Null just freaks Inari the hell out. Kinda surprised Inari was getting ready to reap Phil as that feels more like something Izanami or her handmaidens should do but maybe this falls under some kind of “that’s on freaky thing” exemption.
Gender fluid bit fits with El Goonish too 😀
Growing up is painful.
We’ve all been there.
I think they got the point Yuki, here’s the part where you hug them and properly introduce them to Phil so the goofball can nerd out and they can realize that he’s not a threat at all.
ya messed up, Inari.
Just because mom is scolding you, it dosen´t mean she don´t love you.
Tends to be the reason they freak out even. If Yuki didn’t love them…well she wouldn’t have saved them.
This actually brings up a good question of what Phil’s magic would actually do if taking an aggressive posture. The Suijin implied it felt like it could erase his existance if I recall correctly. Does this mean Spirits or noncorporeal creatures are inherently weak to his magic due to their nature?
Fully spirit like creatures or even constructs of magic are often erased by the null power. The will of that power, which seems to generally align with though isn’t reliant on Phil’s morals, get’s to decide how far it goes.
For example, as explained her, Phil see’s Inari as a person, so it’s unlikely to erase him, although being a spirit like being it probably could.
On the other hand, take the celestials that attacked Axel and smashed themselves into Phil- they appeared as swords, but even then they were recognized enough to not just negate them completely- they turned into harmless spirit particles of celestial energy, allowing them to return – although through a much longer method of travelling than they would normally go -basically forcing the celestials to intercept them on route for them to ever reach the edge of the universe within the next thousand years (and yeah that means they were still traveling waaaay faster than the speed of light- they aren’t physical particles at that point so they wouldn’t be restricted by the speed of light yada yada nerd talk).
Then take the case with the sniper bullet. The bullet was not magical at all- and it was dematerialized completely. No flash of light, no burst of energy, no portal or deflection- broken down to nothing and vanished- no trace left behind. (nerd train again- that means it totally breaks the “laws of physics”- matter got destroyed, not turned into energy- destroyed- no longer exists- gone- and that was a physical object, not a magical being which can feel itself unravelling in Phil’s presence when they feel animosity from him)
Yuki also implied that she feels like if you can convince Phil of something, his magic will likely make an exception for magic in that case. Allowing that magic to affect him or make it so the magic avoids or doesn’t interfere with nearby magical equipment. It’s possible the magic, since it does have a will of it’s own, might see that attempt at convincing him to be a trick, and there’s no telling how smart it actually is, perhaps that’s why Phil comes across as simple sometimes… Any real bit of conniving/cunning in him belongs to the will of the Null. Or maybe it’s just less impartial and isn’t as easily swayed so it can better look out for it’s accident prone ally…
Sounds like the inverse problem life and death had. His magic has a nascent ego, because everytime a Null was born, they were assasinated. So the Null magic doesn’t have enough experiences to form a full personality/connection with the host. That’s an interesting thought process.
Suggestions of physics 😀
Guy meeds to stop surviving and start living, maybe he’ll come back with them?
Inari signs up for the godling exchange program.
that is something I think is interesting. the fact Inari is shown to even be able to reap people caught my attention. Also how quickly they went on the offensive makes me wonder one of two things. Either A: Nulls are just that insanely rare. or B : A past Null was a menace who caused lots of harm. Considering how many people knew what Phil is, or what he can do… the number of people that have no idea, or had never seen anything like it is pretty interesting. The fact INARI of all beings reacted instantly out of fear could say quite a bit on its own.
The Null is like the Magi, the Saint, and the Vile: They aren’t just “rare”, they’re unique in their lifetimes and exceptionally powerful and stand at the pinnacle of their respective magical specialties.
And the Null takes it a step further by being a manufactured anomaly. As explained by Water (https://www.yoshsaga.com/comic/waters-pressure/) the elemental magic of Earth created the Null magic to put a stop to the abuses by the ancient Magi. And what’s terrifying about it as far as everything else magical is concerned is that it’s not only stupid-powerful, but adaptive and more or less unprecedented.
As far as most of the incredibly limited number of people and entities with [comprehensive] knowledge of magical history are concerned, the Null was a singular warrior who was integral in the sealing of magic in ancient times. Came out of nowhere and – since there was virtually no magic anywhere for the immunity to be useful against – disappeared just as quickly.
What is less known is that the Null hero was in fact the second person to have that magic. The first was a rando who got blasted by the Magi of Death. And given that magic’s ties to the other elements…that basically granted the Null magic (and therefore the next Null) broad spectrum immunity to magic in general, in its strongest expressions.
And Phil – the third known Null – has led a life that has resulted in it growing even more powerful, granting him powerful resistance to physical trauma as well.
So as far as most supernatural forces are concerned? Phil is terrifying partially because almost none of them have any context for him in the first place, but also because his resistance makes him come off as impossibly powerful.
