Why does he have to ask Kate’s permission to do things?
To show respect to his significant other. He wants to include her and be respectful to her. Otherwise they end up separating because they no longer share the same interest.
That’s not how it’s phrased, though. He saying he has to ask her if he can go, like a child asking their parent. Or like someone in an unhealthy relationship that’s not allowed to do something without permission.
Doomedelf is correct, that’s the reasoning, the way he said it is the general sign of Phil’s childness to make it funny- like a little kid having to ask his parents if it’s ok to go over to Emi’s house to play. It would be incredibly rude for Phil to just go on a day trip without telling Kate or asking if she had plans already, especially if he wants to invite her to go with them.
